Ocean Education Center

At Night
Body:

The Ocean Education Center is an innovative learning environment where children and adults alike are presented with opportunities to research and explore marine life and the environment in which it thrives. The project consists of six buildings: learning center classrooms and laboratories, a student services building, a multipurpose auditorium, a campus bookstore, a tank farm aquarium housing a collection of local marine life, tide pool exhibits, staff offices, and a sleeping deck for student overnights. The planning of the center reflects the concept of an expedition – represented by the 'Yard' or staging areas, the 'Camp' or the buildings themselves, and the 'Land's End'&emdash; the ocean front park included as an integral part of the design and learning experience. The wood, glass, and concrete buildings seek a balance of energy conscious, sustainable design recalling coastal California marine labs. The project included full service programming, architecture, interior design, and engineering related to the design of this new home for The Ocean Institute.
